7 Ways to Keep Germs Away from Babies and Toddlers

keep germs away from babiesKids are great at catching germs from their classmates and friends, and then sharing those germs with everything they touch. Parents know  how notorious babies and toddlers are at putting everything they find into their mouths! Their underdeveloped immune system make them susceptible to catching a cold or the flu. Every mother understands how easy it is for kids to get sick, and how quickly it can get through the house, infecting the entire family.

To keep your kids from getting sick and keep the family well, parents should do their best to protect their family from germs. Use these seven ways to keep your kids’ environments as clean as possible.

1. Create a barrier between your child and publicly shared items.

Of course, it’s better use personal items that you’re 100% sure have been sanitized before use, but occasionally you’ll have no choice but to use a public item, such as a grocery cart, high chair, or booster seat. Use a blanket or cover to separate your kid from the public item. Ideally, use one with a two-sided design so you can be sure which side goes against the dirty surface.

2. Wash your hands with soap often.

If you aren’t already, get into the habit of washing your hands several times a day, especially before eating, preparing meals, or going out. Teach your child to do the same some so you instill a good habit and he/she does it for the rest of their lives. Turn the routine into a fun game by having them sing a song to indicate how long they should was. If you aren’t near a sink, use hand sanitizer (but not for babies).

3. Bring a clean space with you.

Wherever you go (like the park, day care, traveling, gym class, or even diaper changes) make sure you bring a safe, clean space for your child to play. Bring a portable multi-use padded play mat so you can rest your baby down without worrying about what he or she will come in contact with. The best play mats are able to roll up or have a zipper on the side so you can pack them conveniently and keep one side clean. The Woombie Eco’Donut has ultra plush minky dot fabric that feels good against baby’s skin. It’s perfect for travel, daycare, visits, and diaper changes.  Parents love the side zipper to instantly create a carry bag that keeps the mat clean.

portable multi use padded play mat for baby

4. Stock up on all-natural cleaning products.

It’s important to be sure that all the cleaning agents you use at home aren’t full of harmful chemicals. Many laundry detergents and soaps will irritate baby’s sensitive skin. The best products use natural ingredients that are safe for everyone.

5. Keep those toys squeaky clean.

All the toys and stuffed animals in your child’s nursery should be washed regularly, especially if they’re used often. These are the most likely culprits that will spread germs on to your little one. Check the labels on each item to understand the proper washing directions.

6. Learn proper sneeze ettiquette.

Sneezing is one the ways germs spread. As you sneeze, germs are released into the air or on to surfaces for other people to pick up. It’s important we cover our mouths when sneezing, but not with our hands! Our hands would just spread the germs further as we interacted with people and things. Instead, teach kids to sneeze into the crook of their elbows.

7. Learn about sharing.

Sharing is a complicated lesson for kids. It’s easy to encourage them to share everything, but for health and safety that isn’t the case. Sharing toys, crayons, and turns playing the dragon is very important, but discourage them from sharing items like chap stick, unwashed clothing, or water bottles to avoid bringing on illness.

The Benefits of Positive Parenting & 4 Ways How

positive parentingFew parents understand how ineffective harsh discipline can be. True, it’s important to set limits, stick to them, and even punish, but encouragement of good behavior is far more effective. Positive parenting is a parenting style that involves raising a child without being forceful or unnecessarily harsh. It means using positive reinforcement to correct behavior rather than cruel discipline.

By interacting positively with your children, you can foster stronger, more robust relationships with them. As they grow, a strong relationship with their parents will make discipline easier as time goes on. They won’t fear you; they’ll trust you. When they’re older, discipline and punishments won’t be necessary. You’ll be able to talk to your child and help them understand why a behavior was inappropriate.

Positive parenting is NOT about letting your child live without limits. Obviously you have to set boundaries so they can live safely and grow up to be productive, happy people. Positive parenting is about how you respond when they cross the line, and how you proactively combat poor behavior even when they’re behaving properly.

Children raised in positive parenting environments tend to fit more easily into most social situations. They’re more confident and capable of receiving better results than they would of had they been raised under an authoritarian parenting style. Further, they’re likely to naturally pass on a positive parenting style to their children, creating a cycle.

You can practice the positive parenting model using these four tips:

1. Be consistent.

A key point in positive parenting is to be absolutely clear with what you expect. Tell your child outright what is considered acceptable or good behavior. Don’t leave them guessing. Remember they don’t have as fine a grasp of how to behave properly like you do, so they can’t be expected to get it right the first time. Be consistent with your requirements and respond every time.

2. “Catch” good behavior.

When your child does something especially good, make sure to call them out on it. We’re quick to admonish the bad behavior, but we forget that our children need reassurance when they’re doing something good, too. If you praise them for acting properly, they’ll seek that praise more often because they know it’s available.

3. Understand their feelings.

It’s important to get a handle on your child’s feelings. Come up with ways to get your children to express themselves to you. Don’t assume why they’re upset. Even little ones can surprise you with how eloquently they feel. If you admonish them for behaving poorly and they’re upset because you were harsh with them (instead of upset over their behavior) then you’ll have a clue that your negative discipline isn’t working. Remember: Children will grow up to treat themselves as you have treated them.

4. Build a relationship.

If you don’t have a deep relationship with your kids, you’ll never be able to adjust their behavior, no matter how much praise you heap on their accomplishments. It’s essential that you become a person in your child’s life who they look up to. If you’re constantly aloof, don’t visit, or don’t offer any loving guidance, your opinion won’t matter to them.

5 Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Better

baby sleep tipsIf you have trouble getting your little ones to sleep through the night, you actually have lots of options available to you. The baby’s environment plays a big part in making the baby comfortable enough to sleep, and that includes their sleep wear. You’ll have a healthier, happier baby if you find a sleep routine that works and stick to it every night. Here are 5 great tips to help your baby get more restful sleep.

1. Figure out the best sleep training model for your baby.

There are several effective sleep training methods at your disposal. Dr. Rebecca Kempton, M.D., child sleep consultant, graduate of Family Sleep Institute Graduate, and founder of Baby Sleep Pro says, “The answer to what will work best depends on a variety of factors including your child’s temperament, your goals, your tolerance levels, and the amount of involvement you would like to have in the process.”

A child sleep consultant could help you create a customized sleep plan that will work for your family. The Baby Sleep Whisperer and the Family Sleep Institute are great resources for this.

Here are four child sleep training methods that Dr. Kempton discusses in detail: Four Child Sleep Training Methods.

2. Try a warm bath

Warm water is relaxing, especially for babies. A pre-bedtime soak could be an effective part of your nightly routine. Use a gentle baby wash with a soothing scent. This is also valuable bonding time between the baby and parent.

3. Room temperature

A baby’s room should be kept warmer during the day and cooler at night. The best temperature is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If the room is too hot or cold for you, then it’s not right for the baby either. Avoid bundling so the baby doesn’t get to warm. Use a breathable baby swaddle where excess heat escapes through a ventilation design. Overheating is a SIDS risk.

4. Ambient noises

In the womb, babies are exposed to lots of noises. Not only would a simple white noise machine help them fall asleep, but it reduces stress, makes them cry less, and helps them remain sleeping longer.

5. Swaddling

Swaddling is not a new practice. It’s been done for hundreds of years help babies sleep longer and more deeply. It can potentially be the single most powerful sleep tool in a mother’s arsenal. Swaddling mimics the womb’s enviornment by touching the baby everywhere. It also prevents the startle reflex so the baby isn’t awoken as easily, and helps keep them on their back, which is important to combat SIDS. Use a swaddle that softly cocoons baby without restricting motion or mobility, one that requires no wrapping, which makes swaddling easier for parents.

6 Sleep Tips for Easier Traveling with Children Over the Holidays

sleep tips for holiday travelingWith the holiday season quickly approaching, many parents are wondering how to fit their holiday travel plans around their child’s sleep schedule. In my work with children and families as a certified sleep consultant, I’ve learned how to help families get through the holidays. Here are 6 tips to help your children sleep well while traveling this holiday season.

1. Establish healthy sleep habits before you leave

A well-rested child will adapt to changes in their routine and schedule better than an overtired child, so make sure they are caught up on sleep before you go. It’s also important to have a consistent sleep routine in place so that you can re-create their nap and bedtime routine when traveling. This will be comforting to your child as they will recognize the sleep cues even in a strange place.

2. Do some planning ahead of time

If you don’t normally share a room with your child, try not to share a room while you are traveling. Book a hotel suite instead of a single room, hang a sheet as a room divider, or use a walk-in closet as a temporary nursery. If you child is unable to see you, it will make the transition easier and they won’t be looking for middle of the night stimulation. If you plan on using a travel crib or playpen over the holidays, allow your child to practice sleeping in it before you go.

3. Bring along their sleep environment and favorite items

Bring your child’s sheets, blankets and sleep sack with you if possible. Their familiar smell and feel will help calm your child in a strange environment. If your child is used to falling asleep to white noise, bring that along as well to help soothe them and drown out any unfamiliar noises. Also don’t forget to bring your child’s favorite lovey, pacifier or stuffed toy as these items are invaluable when traveling away from home.

4. Preserve sleep schedules as much as possible

Where possible, make your travel and holiday plans around your child’s normal sleep schedule. Make it possible for your child to nap when they usually nap, and maintain your usual nap time and bedtime routine. If you follow your usual schedule and routine, your children are less likely to lose sleep and become cranky and overtired.

5. Help them adjust to changing time zones

If you are traveling to a different time zone for more than a few days, get your child’s schedule on the new time as quickly as possible. Have your child go to bed at their usual bedtime and be sure to wake up your child in the morning when they would normally wake up. It also helps to expose your children to plenty of natural light to reset their internal clock.

6. Have a plan of action for your return home

If there were many changes to your child’s sleep environment, schedule and sleep habits while away, your child’s sleep may be a little “off” upon your return home. Have a plan to get your child back on their usual schedule and routine the minute you walk through your front door. If your child missed some sleep over the holidays, plan for an earlier bedtime to help them catch up on sleep. The sooner you get them well-rested and back to their regular routine, the sooner your child will adjust to being back home.

4 Tips for Staying Healthy and Happy This Holiday Season

The holiday season is among us – a time for celebrations, togetherness, and joy. With al20131212-085936.jpgl of the hustle and bustle, though, it can become a challenge to keep your family’s physical and emotional health in check. Here are some tips to help keep you and your family healthy and happy this holiday season.

1. Eat well. Each year, Americans pack on an average of 1-2 pounds over the holiday season. While this number is not alarming by itself, the fact that most people never lose those added holiday pounds and they continue to accumulate over the years, is. Here are several ways to enjoy the holidays and eat both healthy and well to help avoid packing on the holiday pounds:
- Don’t deprive yourself of treats, rather indulge in moderation.
- Eat smaller meals instead of “saving yourself” for one huge buffet.
- Opt for healthy options at home.
- When visiting others, bring a healthy dish to share.
- Be mindful of liquid calories, including alcoholic beverages.

2. Manage Holiday Stress Levels. Over-committing your family to holiday events and get-togetherness can equal poor family health. To minimize holiday anxiety, make sure that your family gets plenty of sleep, be selective of the festivities to which you commit, and leave plenty of time for relaxing at home to reduce stress.

3. Stay Active. Exercise is just as important during the holidays as any other time of the year. You should be active at least four to five times a week, preferably with some aerobic exercise every day. The weather may be cold outside, but winter offers many opportunities for new family activities and is a great time to try out some of the local indoor fitness options. Ice skating, sledding, snow sprints, indoor rock climbing, laser tag, basketball at your local gym- all of these can be great exercise. Enlist all if your family members to join in and enjoy some quality bonding time, too.

4. Make Time to Help Others. Did you know that numerous studies have found that people who make a habit of helping others report better health and overall happiness than those who don’t? The holiday season is a great time to help others and to teach your children about the importance of helping others as well. As a family, take an active role to support those in need. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
- Invite friends, neighbors or colleagues who are alone over the holidays to spend them with your family.
- Volunteer at your local food bank.
- Make holiday cards to deliver to a nursing home.
- Donate gently used toys and clothing to a family in need or a local charity.

And remember, even the tiniest acts of kindness have the potential to make a positive change for others.

Happy Holidays!

12 Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe This Holiday

The Holidays are here. OK, I said it. Hard to believe but true! The holiday season is often hectic and can be incredibly stressful to many parents. This year, global changes and uncertainty are also pinterestxmastipsfactoring into our holiday mood. There are so many things going on around us and often personal safety gets overlooked during this hectic time. However, now is the best time to brush up on safety with your family. There will be lots of interaction with family and friends and new experiences and new places. Now is a great time to practice “what if” scenarios with your kids. Believe it or not, taking time to talk safety with your kids will take some of the anxiety out of your holiday season and theirs.

Here are some great tips on how to stay safe during the holidays.

Safety while shopping:

• Have a designated spot (like a sales counter) to meet at if you get separated.

• Make sure younger kids practice their name, your name and cell phone number

• Remind kids never to leave the store, no matter what!

• Practice identifying “safe grown ups” while you are out and about

• Older kids should always take a friend when going to the mall without and adult

• Remind kids to always check first with you before going anywhere or accepting gifts

• Never leave children unattended in stores, arcades, or playgrounds

Safety at holiday parties:

• Let your child chose who they wish to show affection to. Do not force them to kiss or hug someone. Even if it means hurting Grandma or Uncle Joes feelings. Your child needs to know they have power over their own bodies.

• Check in on your kids when you are at a large gathering or function. Make sure they are doing OK.

• Kids need to check first with a parent before going off with someone at the party (eg. To play video games or watch a movie in the bedroom or leaving the house to go play in the front yard)

• Have each adult at the party take 20 minute “shifts” to cruise around and check on the kids to make sure they are all doing OK.

• If someone is making your child uncomfortable (excessive tickling, hugging, wrestling) intervene on your child’s behalf to end the behavior. You child needs to know they have your support and that you are there to protect them, no matter what.
